This Is 23

Last month, I turned 23. Which makes this post a bit overdue.

My opinion on 23 is that: this is the year where I have to start being somewhat of an adult. With a fresh class of new graduates, gone are the days of being able to use "trying to adult" jokes. I guess I had to stop stealing my neighbor's wifi at some point.

this year

This past year has been a good one. I moved to Chicago, started my big kid job as a management consultant, and worked through the decision of entering a long distance relationship. Two years ago all I wanted to do was move to New York, I had basically zero interest in consulting,  and being in a relationship was amongst my lowest priorities.

Funny, isn't it?

I wouldn't change how things turned out.

As of late, I'm in the best shape that I've ever been in. Somehow, going to the gym 5-6 times a week has proven easier than only 2-3 times. There's no more negotiating with myself over rest days, because every day is a workout day. It's done wonders for my mood and I've subsequently been eating cleaner without too much extra effort.

Except for late night drunken pizza rolls from 7/11. Sorry Mom. 

birthday festivities

trattoria no. 10

Jonny was in town for my birthday and kicked off the day by surprising me with a delicious pancake breakfast. Later that evening, the first stop of the night was an Italian birthday dinner at Trattoria No. 10 in the Loop. I could eat pasta all day, every day. Unfortunately, my doctor mentioned that, unless I'm Michael Phelps, I don't need to be carbo-loading at every single one of my meals.

However, for my birthday celebration some carbo-loading was perfectly appropriate, because our next stop of the night came with some very sugary (re: strong) drinks.

three dots and a dash

One of my favorite spots in River North is Three Dots and a Dash. With an assortment of friends coming out to celebrate my birthday, this colorful tiki bar was a great spot. The upscale vibe and fancy drinks are perfect for that Instagram, but the crowd is lowkey enough that you can still hold an actual conversation.

If you're smart enough to book a table two months out (yes, that is how long the wait for a table is), you can get in on some tapas-style food and take bottle service to a whole new level with their $400 tiki Treasure Chest drink.

Yes, it is served in a treasure chest. Who needs Grey Goose and a sparkler to tell the whole bar you're a high roller, when you've got a treasure chest oozing a heavy layer of fog.

While we did not invest in the highly overpriced Treasure Chest, I did manage to down several other classic, sugary concoctions. 

what's next?

My one year work anniversary is just around the corner. It doesn't feel like it has been a year.

What's next?

That's a big question when the past 23 years have been a linear path: springing from grade school, to college, to my first corporate job.

But now what?

Before starting full-time, I'd had 7 different jobs since I was 16 years old. I've had this blog for over 4 years, been tinkering with my DSLR every chance I get for the past 1 year, and have committed to a healthy lifestyle for the past 6 months (with no intentions of letting up).

For anyone who knows me, there's always something around the corner. I'm ready for you 23.
